Just finished the first of a series of camouflage inspired code paintings. It's a top secret project the grid has me exploring. How does text look if it is color based as opposed to characters? Can we learn to read color as if it were a book?

Line

I woke up.
A line was running out from my forehead out into space.
I could feel another line running vertically through my body. It extended out of the top of my head and through the soles of my feet.
A line was running horizontal slicing me in half.
These lines were all repeated at regular intervals out into infinity.
What is this place?

Definition

What is a gridform, one may ask.
The answer is not as difficult as it originally seemed.

Gridform is a term that describes the use of interconnected lines as a way of investigating the relationships between units within a data set. Through the creation of these lines, similarities and differences are made more visually clear. A gridform is an organizational system that simplifies the information that it is designed to express at the same time that it increases the amount and complexity of the information that can be displayed. This is, perhaps, its most important characteristic.

It may also be said that a gridform, at its root level, is a type of display for a collection of information. Gridform has existed in different configurations as long as we have tried to understand our individual positions within a larger world.

What is a gridform, one may ask.
The answer becomes more difficult the moment we attempt to answer.

This is freaking me out right now. Yes I am a nerd. Tis' now proven. I am typing this communique in an application that simulates the way I learned to use the computer when I was a much younger man... probably before I was a man.
If you could see what I write as I write you would understand. A simple analogy would require multiple references one of which includes watching Doogie Howser, MD. BTW... I used to think that Vinnie grew up to be the dude in NUMB3RS, but I was wrong... he was in a few episodes of the Sopranos which doesn't have math as crime solving the way I like.... but I digress.
My only advice at this point is that if you do the whole MAC thing the way that I do you should definitely check out the WriteRoom application. I may even purchase it!!! and that's saying alot.

I'll post more updates later this week.

I think I finished the painting that is the central focus of my MFA project. In total I'll work with 216 images of said painting. It will be displayed in its final state as well as the 16 screen dual projector animation, large format print of each image, stack of prints on transparency and light box, and finally a collection of versions of the animated video including installation tests.

That was a mouthful and I know it sounds confusing but it makes sense in my head. Also, this is only what I think it will end up being right now. Maybe I'll post a diagram of what the installation may look like. I've got about a month and a half to work out the kinks now that I'll be in a post-production sort of stage.

This spring is shaping up to be busy. My MFA show will open April 11, 2008. More info on that soon. I found out this weekend that I'll be able to participate in the Media Arts Show of the Visionary Landscapes: Electronic Literature Organization 2008 Conference. Digital Media in Valencia, Spain will have some of my work as part of a video program curated by one of my old professors Mat Rappaport. I also have a few apps out for some video things in Chicago in April. On top of that I'll be gettin hitched in June and trying to find work for the $$$ after grad school.

In addition, very soon I'll be wrapping up the production of the painting that will be featured in my MFA project. After that it will be worked into about 4-6 different types of visual representation. If you guessed from my notes the other day, I'll be thinking more about database as a presentation format. The information generated by the creation of a painting will be organized and presented in different ways allowing the viewer to view the work from multiple perspectives. The painting itself is made from a collection of different types of grid structures that are used to reformat information so that it can be viewed and explored in different ways.

User decides interaction with database as multiple forms and organizations of the work are presented simultaneously in the same space. Different forms of the same collected information (grid image).

the first of the month

First, I apologize for the last post as it was clearly meant for another blog that I post to. It was not necessarily grid related.

That said, my head spins. After having been relocated within this grid system, I have found it exceedingly difficult to locate myself. Nothing here appears as it had before. I am lost in a network of intersecting lines. My interactions with other individuals is the same, but I am viewing them from a different position. This causes me to read and interpret the information that they present in a different way. This is a meaningful shift as it proves one of my previous assertions: From each point within this system everything is the same although it may appear different and conversely, everything is different although it may appear to be the same.

This highlights the interaction between units and wholes that typifies the ubiquity of the grid. Each part is a whole that is also made up of parts. At each level the complexity is apparent in the relationship between individual unit/parts and the entirety of the system. But this is all that I know. I can go no further... it gets only more occluded and gray the deeper I dig. And at every moment of clarity, when a veil is removed, I sink deeper into recesses and regions of the grid that are more complex still.

I will make no claims as to why he is not regarded as the premier musician of the mid to late eighties... but I would venture to say that it mayhaps was because of skin tone.... I mean... Lionel Ritchie (whom I also luv) was doin a similar thing but he had blind girlz and was somehow more acceptable
