Upcoming Shows & Events

On Friday, Feb. 4 in Indianapolis - TPS Reports: Performance Art Documents will open from 6-10pm at the Spacecamp Microgallery. Included in the show will be some of the drawings I did as part of my 9/9/09 performance. They are china maker on black stonehenge. Here's a quick video of the performance - but they'll be showing the drawings, which I have to admit, I really love because they look really cool.


On Wednesday, Feb 9 in New York City - New Media Caucus at CAA will be having a night of short artist presentations. I'll be one of I think 18 artists from the New Media Caucus and my presentation will be an overview of the work I post here and some other directions it takes. Its at * SVA MFA Computer Art Department – 133-141 West 21st Street from 6-8pm

I won't be able to make the Indianapolis show, but I will be in NYC for CAA. If you're going to be around, let me know and hopefully we can catch up!

Getting Closer is reviewed in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and curator Lindsay Howard has posted a set of photos from the show that are 1million times better than my phone pics!

On Nadav Assor (also a founding member of Upgrade! Tel Aviv):
“I am greatly interested in theories and explorations of urban architectural, emotional and ideological sub-structures. One tactic I use in exposing and reshaping the structures around me is digitization, in the sense of reduction to a primal, reconfigurable matter. The transformed digital matter is recast into its original context, physically manipulated in an ongoing live process that ranges from the absurd to the violent. The outcome often presents various transgressions or inversions of the technological, socio-political structures that served as a starting point. Many of the mechanisms inherent in my work require palpable, physical effort or struggle to manipulate, thus exposing the constant friction between body and media. I do not want my devices to ‘run smoothly’.
My work has been shown in Berlin, Chicago, and in many Israeli venues, including several showings at the Israeli Center for Digital Art, the C.Sides International electronic media festival, the Laptopia festival, the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel-Aviv, The Haifa and Bat Yam Museums and more. I have received a 2006 Leumi (the Israeli national bank) award for excellence in the arts.
I am currently pursuing my MFA with full fellowship in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.”

Maria Bolivar was born in Caracas, Venezuela. She was significantly influenced by her father, Cesar Bolivar, who is a well-known film director in Latin America. After attending the most important design academy in Venezuela: El Instituto de Diseño de Caracas, Maria spent three years as a professional designer. Due to the violence and her involvement in the 2002 National Strike in Venezuela, Maria was forced to come to Milwaukee in where she received her BFA in communication design from the Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) in 2006. Maria is currently pursuing a Master’s of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee with an intermedia focus.

Milwaukee is a regular gathering of digital creatives - artists, musicians, performers, writers, curators and the public - that fosters dialogue and creates opportunities for collaboration within the local new media community. It features 1-3 guest speakers at each event, held at a rotating venue: informal, free, and open to all. We welcome suggestions for speakers, panels or gatherings. Upgrade! Commentary on Foundations Education

Okay. I try not to post commentary here because I prefer to keep this area as a medium for drawing. But lately I've had to post a few more words and a few less text-based images. I can't help myself this time because I'm on my way back from a conference that was both good and troubling.

MOstly it was good except for this guy who talked at two back to back panels about the same thing with horrible slide presentations running behind him. I actually got his book in the mail at my department without asking a few years ago and didn't realize it was the same person until he started talking.

What was troubling was that he presented an argument that I think is old and boring and I really couldn't believe that people were still arguing about it. Aside from all the inside jokes and jabs at other universities/instructors/artists, what I gathered from his talk(S) was that digital media is dangerous for first year students.

Brian Curtis' second panel was hand picked because he was the organizer and also presented so we got to her this theme over and over again. NOt to mention this other guy who thinks used a juggling analogy unti I almost puked.

Basically, they think that the computer or software run on computers makes art, not the people working with those things. I think they don't get it that software and digital media are just another media and you have to teach people how to use it, how it works, and why it does what it does so that they can understand it too. Ofcourse you can always use defaults and cheats, but those aren't what is progressive about digital media. What's progressive about digital media is understanding how/why they work or don't work and teaching how to use them as a tool for the creation of content. Only jerks think that the computer does all the work. It does some of the work, just like paint, just like charcoal but the rest of it comes from inside the programmer/artist.

I think it bothered me the most because there are still people that think that using a computer means you turn your brain off and are passive. That it doesn't take any physical memory at all and that you don't have to do anything. Sure at the Foundations level students have only used computers for limited interaction. That doesn't mean they shouldn't learn how to use the tool properly. YOu just have to take the time to engage them with that tool in a way that opens it up. For example, most students don't draw much before art school... maybe they drew cartoons or whatever they were interested in but we still should teach them what drawing is and how it works. I guess I just don't see any difference between how you teach/learn different media.

Oh, and someone on that panel said that art shouldn't have any meaning and that it should only be entertainment.

Whatever, they were out palling around while I talked about how to incorporate traditional drawing methods with digital media practice in a way that doesn't compromise either of them.

Its not too late to attend the Present Music Event - Flight Box (Saturday, Mar 28). This event will screen my "gridworks2000-anim09" video which is also available as a DVD single and can be purchased from my website (click the buy now button). It will also be screened next month at the Short Film Festival @ Terminal Gallery @ Austin Peay State University (TN).

For a limited time only at the Borg Ward, I'll be projecting a video experiment with something recently discussed online. There aren't gallery hours, but if your down there for a show, you may see it. Next week sfSound will be performing there as organized by UWM PSOA. I'll be in Portland at FATE conference, but should be back in time for that performance.
